Hello everyone,

Just when you think you’re getting a handle on Japanese, it throws Keigo (敬語 - honorific and humble language) at you! Sae has started introducing the basics, and honestly, it feels like learning an entirely new subset of the language.

There are special verbs, different ways of addressing people, and a whole system of showing respect that is so ingrained in Japanese culture. My head is spinning with all the different forms – sonkeigo (尊敬語 - honorific), kenjougo (謙譲語 - humble), teineigo (丁寧語 - polite)… it’s a lot!

It’s incredibly daunting, but also fascinating. Understanding Keigo seems crucial for navigating many real-life situations in Japan. For now, I’m just trying to absorb the very, very basics.
