Why So Many Counters?
To: Triunfo.email Reader
Hey everyone,
Today’s Japanese learning adventure has led me into the wild world of… counters. Yes, counters. You wouldn’t think counting things could be so complex, but Japan has a special way of doing it!
There are counters for flat things (枚 - mai), long cylindrical things (本 - hon), animals (匹 - hiki), people (人 - nin), and so, so many more. My brain is struggling to keep them all straight. Why can’t I just use numbers like in English? It feels like a special kind of linguistic pain right now.
If anyone has a good mnemonic or trick for these, I’m all ears!
Counting on your support (pun intended!),
Oliver
